Indian citizens achieve the right to elect their own members of

legislative councils.

1919

Indian self government of provinces allowed.

1920

Mr Mahatma Gandhi wins control of the Indian National congress and instigates a non violent campaign for total Indian self-rule.

1935

India achieves internal control of federal legislature

(local government).

1947

British India is split into two independent elements of:- Pakistan of mainly

(Muslim) faith, and of India, mainly of (Hindu) faith.

1950

The republic of India chooses to become a member of the Commonwealth of Great Britain.
